Flying alone?
When I was 14 I went on holiday to Florida to visit my Grandfather who lives out there. It is not unusual for a 14 year old child to go to Florida; however it was a bit different considering I went there alone. My parents dropped me off at the airport and my granddad picked me up on the other side but it was quite surreal being 14 and travelling across the Atlantic for 9 hours with strangers. Doing something like that is definitely an experience but it is not as rare as you would think. The air hostesses were very kind and supportive and the flight was a great success! I felt very important and got from A to B and back again with no trouble. The only problem with going to America alone is that after two weeks of not hearing a British accent, you tend to forget how to speak properly and I ended up with an incredibly embarrassing American twang to my voice for a couple of weeks after I returned home! If you have a relative in a foreign country and are brave enough to let your teenager venture to another country alone I would recommend it as a great personal development experience. It encourages a great deal of confidence, individuality and maturity but does require a lot of courage from parent and child. Would you consider it?
